Local SEO for Hotels: How an Independent Hotel Gets Direct Bookings From Google

Travellers compare hotels on Google before they ever reach a booking site. Here is what an independent hotel or guesthouse can do to be seen and booked directly.

Key points

  • Travellers search by place, by date and by need: parking, pets, breakfast, a view.
  • Your Google listing shows prices from booking partners next to your own details.
  • Fill in your amenities one by one: travellers filter on them.
  • Reply to reviews on every platform, and keep the same name and address everywhere.

A couple plans a weekend. They type "hotel" and the name of a town, look at a map covered in prices, filter on "parking" and "breakfast included", and open three listings. Yours may be one of them, or not. Local SEO for hotels decides that, and also whether the booking goes through you or through an intermediary that takes a commission.

How do travellers search for a hotel?

Differently from someone looking for a plumber, in three ways.

  • They are not on the spot. The search is made from another town, days or weeks ahead, with the destination named in the query.
  • They filter. Price, rating, and amenities: parking, pets allowed, pool, air conditioning, accessible rooms.
  • They compare prices on the listing itself. A hotel's listing on Google shows rates from booking sites, and from your own site when it is connected.

Relevance and prominence therefore weigh more than for a walk-in trade, and distance is measured from the place the traveller named: a station, a venue, a town centre.

How should a hotel fill in its Google Business Profile?

  • Category: "Hotel", or the precise type when it exists: guesthouse, bed and breakfast, hostel. See how to choose your category.
  • Hotel details: hotel profiles have a dedicated section for amenities and services. Go through it line by line. An amenity you have not ticked is a filter that hides you.
  • Check-in and check-out times.
  • Photos: rooms of each type, bathroom, breakfast, the front of the building, the view when there is one. See which photos to add.
  • Phone and website: your own, not those of a booking platform.

Not every feature of an ordinary profile is available to hotels. Check what your own profile offers instead of relying on a general guide.

How do you get direct bookings?

By being the simplest option on your own listing.

  • Make sure the website link on your profile goes to a page where a room can be booked in a few taps on a phone.
  • Show on your site what a traveller gains by booking directly, if they gain something real: a flexible cancellation, breakfast, a quiet room on request.
  • Ask your booking engine provider whether it can display your direct rate on your Google listing. Many can.

I will not promise a share of direct bookings: it depends on your market and your rates. What I can say is that a listing whose link leads to a slow page or to a contact form sends the booking elsewhere.

Why do reviews weigh so much for a hotel?

Because a traveller cannot visit first, and because the stay costs more than a meal. They read what guests say about cleanliness, noise, bedding and the welcome.

  • Ask at check-out, or in the message you send after the stay, with your review link. Ask every guest.
  • Reply to each review, including on booking platforms where travellers read them too. See how to respond to Google reviews.
  • When a criticism is fair, say what you changed. Future guests read the reply more than the complaint.

What should your website say?

  • One page per room type, with real photos, the size and the bedding.
  • Access: how to arrive by car, by train, where to park and what it costs.
  • What is nearby, written by you: walking times to the places guests ask about.
  • Your name, address and phone as text, identical to your profile and to booking platforms. See NAP consistency.

A hotel is listed on many sites. A citation checker compares your details on the general directories; check the booking platforms by hand.

Do AI assistants matter for hotels?

Travellers ask assistants to suggest places to stay. The answers draw on what is published about you: your site, reviews, travel guides. An AI visibility tracker measures in what share of answers you are mentioned for the questions you choose. It is a coverage rate, not a ranking.

Summary

PriorityAction
1Amenities completed line by line
2Photos of each room type
3A website link that leads straight to booking
4A review request at every departure, a reply to every review
5The same name, address and phone on every platform

My opinion: an independent hotel cannot outspend the booking platforms, but it can be more accurate than them about itself. Start with the amenities and the photos.
