Google Business Profile Photos: Which Ones to Add and How to Choose Them

Photos are what a customer looks at before reading a single line of your profile. Here is which ones to add to your Google Business Profile, and which mistakes to avoid.

Key points

  • Add a logo, a cover photo, then photos of the outside, the inside, your work and your team.
  • Real photos of your business do better than stock images, which Google's guidelines discourage.
  • Customers add photos too: you cannot choose them, but you can report those that break the rules.
  • Add new photos regularly, so that the profile shows the business as it is today.

Open any listing on Google Maps and watch what your thumb does: it goes to the photos. Before the description, before most of the reviews, a customer looks at pictures to answer one question: "is this the kind of place I am looking for?" Here is how I would choose Google Business Profile photos for a local business.

Why do photos carry so much weight?

Because they are proof. Anyone can write "warm welcome" in a description. A photo of the room, the counter or a finished job shows it.

They also help in a practical way. A photo of your storefront, taken from the street, lets a first-time customer recognise the door. For a business in a courtyard or on an upper floor, that picture avoids lost visitors and phone calls asking where you are.

Which photos should you add first?

  1. Your logo, so that customers recognise you in the results.
  2. A cover photo, the one that best represents the business. Google does not promise to show it first, but it tells Google which one you prefer.
  3. The outside, from the angles people arrive from, in daylight.
  4. The inside: the room, the waiting area, the workshop.
  5. Your work: dishes, haircuts, finished building sites, products.
  6. Your team, with the agreement of the people shown.

What makes a photo good enough?

It does not need a professional photographer. It needs to be sharp, well lit, and true. Google's photo guidelines ask for images that represent the place as it is, without heavy filters or added text, and discourage stock images. A phone held steady near a window is enough for most trades.

Take the outside photos on a clear day, without a van parked in front of the sign. Take the inside photos when the place is tidy and, if possible, in use.

What about photos added by customers?

Customers can add their own photos to your profile, and you cannot remove them because you dislike them. You can report a photo that breaks Google's rules: one that shows another business, for instance, or that is offensive. Google decides.

The best answer to an unflattering customer photo is ten good recent photos of your own. A profile where the owner's pictures are many and current gives a fair image.

How often should you add new ones?

Regularly, and whenever something changes: a new shopfront, a renovated room, a new menu, a new vehicle. A profile whose latest photo shows last year's decoration tells a customer that nobody looks after it.

I would set a simple habit: a few new photos every month, taken during normal work.

Do photos change your ranking?

Google does not publish a rule saying that a number of photos moves you up. What it does say is that complete and accurate profiles are easier to match with searches. I would treat photos as what convinces a customer once you are shown, and work on your position separately: see how to rank higher on Google Maps.

To know where you are shown in the first place, a position map gives your rank around your address.

My opinion: an hour with a phone and good light improves most profiles more than a week spent rewriting the description.
