Fake Google Reviews: How to Spot Them, Report Them and Protect Your Business
A fake review can come from a competitor, a stranger or a campaign. Here is how to recognise one, how to report it to Google, and what never to do in return.

Key points
- A review is fake when it does not reflect a real experience with your business.
- Report it from your profile, then follow the report in Google's review management tool.
- Reply calmly while you wait: future customers read your answer.
- Never buy reviews to compensate: it breaks Google's rules and, in several countries, the law.
One morning a one-star review appears from someone whose name is in none of your files. The text describes a service you do not offer. A week later, three more arrive in one afternoon. Fake Google reviews happen to honest businesses, and there is a method for dealing with them that works better than anger.
What counts as a fake review?
Google's policies call it fake engagement: content that does not reflect a real experience. That covers a review written by a competitor, by someone who was never a customer, by a former employee settling a score, by a person paid to write it, or by the owner about their own business.
A harsh review from a real customer is not fake. It may be unfair in your eyes, but it stays within the rules unless it breaks another policy: insults, personal information, off-topic content. See how to remove a Google review for what can and cannot be taken down.
How do you recognise one?
No single sign is proof. Several together are a reason to look closer:
- the name matches no customer, booking or invoice;
- the text mentions a service, a place or a member of staff you do not have;
- several reviews arrive within hours, after months of calm;
- the same account has reviewed businesses in distant towns on the same day;
- the wording is close to that of other recent reviews.
Check your records before deciding. A customer may use a nickname, or have come with someone else who paid.
How do you report it?
- Open the review on your profile and choose the option to report it.
- Select the reason that fits best: for a fake review, the one about content that is not a real experience or about a conflict of interest.
- Note the date of your report.
Google provides a review management tool where you can see the status of the reviews you reported and, when a report is declined, submit an appeal once. Use it instead of reporting the same review again and again.
Keep your evidence simple and factual: "No customer by this name, no booking on that date, and we do not offer the service described."
What should you do while you wait?
Reply, briefly and without accusation:
"We have no record of your visit and we do not offer this service. If we are mistaken, please contact us directly so that we can look into it."
That reply is not for the author. It is for the next customer who reads the page, and who sees a business that answers with facts. See how to respond to Google reviews.
What should you never do?
- Buy positive reviews to dilute the bad ones. It is the same violation as the one you are complaining about, and Google can remove reviews and restrict a profile.
- Ask friends and family to post five stars. A sudden wave of reviews from people who were never customers looks like what it is.
- Offer a discount for a review. Google's rules forbid it.
- Threaten the author publicly.
Beyond Google's rules, the law has moved. In the United States, the Federal Trade Commission adopted a rule in 2024 that prohibits fake reviews. In the United Kingdom, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 bans them too. In France, false reviews fall under misleading commercial practices. Ask a lawyer about your own case.
How do you limit the damage?
With real reviews, collected steadily. A profile with two hundred recent reviews absorbs three fake ones; a profile with eight does not. Ask every customer, at the same moment each time: see how to get more Google reviews.
Watching for new reviews also helps you react within days and not months. Locametra's review tools help you ask every customer in the same way.
Summary
| Step | Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Check your records before calling a review fake |
| 2 | Report it with the right reason and note the date |
| 3 | Follow the report, appeal once if it is declined |
| 4 | Reply with facts, for future readers |
| 5 | Keep collecting real reviews |
| Never | Buy, exchange or reward reviews |
My opinion: the best protection against fake reviews is boring. It is a steady flow of real ones, so that no single review, true or false, can define you.
