Local SEO for Auto Repair Shops: How to Be the Garage People Call First

A driver with a warning light on searches from their phone and calls one of the first garages shown. Here is what an auto repair shop can do to be among them.

Key points

  • Most garage searches are urgent or specific: a symptom, a service, a car make.
  • List each service by name on your profile and on your website.
  • Ask for a review when the customer collects the car, with the same request for everyone.
  • Check your positions around the workshop: distance weighs heavily for a garage.

A warning light comes on, a noise starts under the bonnet, the car fails its inspection. Almost nobody opens a phone book. The driver types a few words into Google Maps, looks at the first three garages, and calls. Local SEO for auto repair shops is the work of being one of those three, with a profile that makes someone trust you with their car.

What do drivers search for?

Rarely just "garage". The searches I see are more precise:

  • a service: "brake repair", "oil change", "tyre fitting", "air conditioning recharge";
  • a symptom: "car won't start", "check engine light";
  • a make: "BMW specialist", "Toyota service";
  • a constraint: "garage open Saturday", "same day MOT".

Each one is a separate search, and a garage can be visible for one and absent for the others. Write down the ten services that bring you the most work. Those are your keywords.

How should a garage fill in its Google Business Profile?

  • Primary category: "Auto repair shop" for a general workshop. If most of your work is one speciality, such as tyres or bodywork, the matching category describes you better. See how to choose your category.
  • Services: add them one by one, in the words customers use. A service that appears nowhere on your profile is a search you are unlikely to show up for.
  • Hours: exact, including the lunch break and Saturdays. A driver who arrives at a closed door writes about it.
  • Photos: the entrance seen from the street, the workshop, the reception. They help a first-time customer recognise the place.
  • Phone: a number that is answered during opening hours. A missed call goes to the next garage on the list.

Why do reviews matter so much for a garage?

Because a driver cannot judge the repair themselves. They rely on what other customers say about the price announced and the price paid, the delay, and whether the problem came back.

Ask when the customer collects the car and the repair is fresh in their mind. A printed QR code at the reception desk works well: you can make one with the free review QR code generator. Ask every customer in the same way. Google's rules forbid asking only those you believe are satisfied, and forbid any discount in exchange.

When a review is critical, reply with facts and without the customer's registration or invoice details. See how to respond to Google reviews.

What should your website say?

One page per main service, with what is included and how long it usually takes in your workshop. If you work on particular makes, say so in text. Put your address, phone and hours on every page, written exactly as on your profile: see NAP consistency.

A local SEO audit tells you whether these pages can be read by search engines.

How far does your visibility reach?

For a garage, less far than owners expect. Google names distance as one of its three local ranking factors, with relevance and prominence. You may be first in your own street and absent two kilometres away.

A position map shows your rank at a grid of points around the workshop, keyword by keyword. Look at where a competitor overtakes you, then compare their profile with yours: categories, services listed, number of reviews.

Summary

PriorityAction
1Right category, services listed one by one
2Exact hours and a phone that is answered
3A review request at every collection, to every customer
4One page per main service on your website
5Positions checked around the workshop, per service

My opinion: a garage that lists its services properly and asks every customer for a review is already ahead of most workshops, which do neither.
